The True Guru Bids Farewell To 2009, Takes Home 2nd Championship

Well, its been a long season, and it is finally over. The True Guru start the season in 6 published leagues and in the end took home two championships. Of course, to all of us fantasy football is about more than championships. its not just winning, but it the fun adults get playing a game and not being called a child for doing it. its the fun of smack talking your friend because you beat him so badly. Its the joy of waking up every Sunday with a renewed vigor to win that day.

I've had a blast playing fantasy football this year and its been even more fun because I got to share it with all of you on my blog. I will be back next year to share another exciting season with you and give you the ups and downs of playing fantasy football in this crazy world.

For week 17 I had to matchups left. One was for a title, the other for third place. I won them both.

Fantasy Dynasty VI
LV Cowboys 273, Abraham Drinkin' 261
I joined this league in its sixth season. It is a full blown keeper league and I inherited a healthy league. I won 9 games during the season finishing 9-5. It was a very exciting playoffs where I barely won both my matchups, and needed every point to do so. The championship went down to the wire and I have to say was one of the best I've ever played. I have to give love to Abraham Drinking. S. Hallam had a great season as well and came from the depths to come within 12 points of a championship. Congrats.

My other matchup was the third place match for the Coast 2 Coast league. Here is how I finished in all my leagues this season:

Vegas Vs Texas League - League Champion
Coast 2 Coast League - 3rd Place
J.A.I.L. League - 3rd Place
NSP Experts League - 4th Place
Fantasy Dynasty VI League - League Champion
Fantasy Football Search Expert League - 4th place.

Overall, I made the playoffs in every league and managed to win two championships. My hat goes off to all the teams I faced in all the leagues. You all helped make it a fabulous year and I can't wait till next season.

NFLTouchdown.com Sunday Snide Remarks Week 17

By Andy Benoit, NFLTouchdown.com

San Diego Chargers 52, Denver Broncos 21
The Chargers are obviously that “hot team that nobody wants to face” right now, but that doesn’t mean they deserve to be in the playoffs. San Diego is three games behind New England in the standings, making them the beneficiaries of a flawed playoff system.

The reason Denver is not in the postseason is that six members of their defensive front seven shouldn’t be starting in the NFL. San Diego’s 289 yards rushing reaffirmed this.

LaDainian Tomlinson looks fresh, and so does Antonio Gates. Factor in the resurgence of the Charger offensive line and, suddenly, Norv Turner is a genius again.

Darren Sproles might be the best backup running back in the league right now. I’d be a little careful in describing him with the word “special” though.

In Week 2 Brandon Marshall caught 18 passes against the Chargers, which inspired me to refer to Antonio Cromartie as “Mrs. Brandon Marshall.” But Sunday night, Cromartie and the rest of the Charger defense limited Marshall to just 55 yards on six catches. Cromartie’s unflattering epithet is officially revoked.

Philadelphia Eagles 44, Dallas Cowboys 6
Everyone will talk about Tony Romo’s meltdowns in December and Wade Phillips’s lack of authority. Both subjects are fair, but neither encompasses the depth of the problem in Big D. Prominent as the Cowboys franchise is, it’s a franchise that hasn’t won a playoff game in 13 seasons. They haven’t had a winning record in December during that span either, and they’ve lost their last nine season finales overall.

The overriding difference in this contest was coaching. Despite not knowing all week if this game would hold any significance to them, the Eagle players were far more prepared than the Cowboy players. Jim Johnson toyed with Jason Garrett all afternoon, and Andy Reid instilled emotion and fire into his men, while Wade Phillips stood by with a look of bewilderment on his face.

Roy Williams, who spoke out about not getting the ball enough earlier in the week, was absolutely pathetic in this game. (Some reports have said that Williams has a foot injury.)

Pac Man Jones is a tremendous athlete who plays hard, but it’s obvious no one has ever had the gall to coach him. His fundamentals and awareness are nowhere near an NFL level.

Before the season began, we thought that this might be one final hurrah for several familiar veterans in Philly. But now, Donovan McNabb looks worthy of a new long-term contract, Brian Westbrook doesn’t seem doomed to hit the 30-year-old running back wall, offensive tackles Jon Runyan and Tra Thomas continue to be remarkably consistent each week and Brian Dawkins looks every bit the Pro Bowler that he is.

The Eagles continue to get great play out of their front seven. Replacing Omar Gaither with Akeem Jordan has helped.

Baltimore Ravens 27, Jacksonville Jaguars 7
Last year, Baltimore, on their way to a 5-11 season, lost at Miami in Week 14. It was the Dolphins’ only win on the season. Now both teams are set to square off in the Wild Card round this Sunday. We might be looking at the most unlikely playoff matchup in NFL history.

Neither Ray Lewis nor Ed Reed will contend for the Defensive Players of the Year award, but ask yourself, Where would the Ravens be without these two?

Guys like Derrick Mason are what wins championships. The überconsistent veteran gutted out a bum shoulder to catch six passes for 77 yards in this game.

If Matt Ryan weren’t so darn good, we’d be talking about Joe Flacco as NFL Offensive Rookie of the Year.

Jacksonville’s VP of Football Operations Shack Harris shouldn’t be taking the fall for this team’s ’08 disaster. If Jacksonville weren’t a well-constructed team, people wouldn’t be so disappointed with their results. Harris did his job; there were coaches and players who didn’t do theirs.

Miami Dolphins 24, New York Jets 17
The Fins deserve to be heralded as one of the greatest turnaround stories in pro football history. There are four reasons for their resurgence: 1. Bill Parcells worked his magic. 2. (Pardon the cliché, but) Tony Sparano changed the culture. 3. Chad Pennington glued Parcells’ and Sparano’s efforts together. 4. Miami was never as bad as their 1-15 record to begin with.

Some of the biggest news of the week came Sunday morning when ESPN’s Chris Mortensen revealed that Bill Parcells could take $9 million and walk away should Wayne Huizenga successfully sell the team. Keep a close eye on this story.

Eric Mangini does not deserve to be fired. He got the Jets to the postseason his first year on the job, and this season, despite the disastrous final month, New York still improved their record by five games.

As a sportswriter, you don’t want to be one of the yokels who wrongly stated that Brett Favre was done. But I think he is. In recent years, Favre’s age has caught up to him late in the season. Of course, any talk about Favre’s future requires an obligatory grain of salt. The grain of salt here is that Favre and Mangini never quite seemed to be on the same page. With the head coach out, perhaps the quarterback will be more inclined to stay. This is just speculation…

NFL TOUCHDOWN SUNDAY SNIDE REMARKS WEEK 16

By Andy Benoit, NFLTouchdown.com

New York Giants 34, Carolina Panthers 28 OT
Great game. It is very apparent we watched the two best teams in the NFC square off. But it wasn’t a flawless outing, especially for the Panthers. After all, their front seven was thoroughly worn down by New York’s offensive line and running backs, and the receivers at times had trouble getting open against a stingy secondary.

Crazy as it sounds, I’m not so sure I would want the No. 1 seed. Think about it: during the flow of an NFL season, a team usually stays home for no more than two weeks in a row. But as the top seed in the playoffs, a team could stay home for up to a month. That is a completely different rhythm. And recent history suggests that the change in schedule can be a disadvantage. The last No. 1 seed to hoist the Lombardi Trophy was the ’03 Patriots.

The Panthers were creative in getting Steve Smith the ball early in this game, but once New York committed safety help, Carolina was content to go elsewhere. The Panthers have enough offensive talent to get away with this, but they might want to at least look for a big play from Smith once or twice a half regardless.

Corey Webster and Aaron Ross were both fantastic Sunday night.

Not enough attention was given to the fact that Ken Lucas’s pass interference in the end-zone late in this game marked the first pass interference penalty called against the Panthers all season. That is simply incredible – especially considering how physical the Carolina cornerbacks are.

Have you noticed that on the sideline during Giants game there always seems to be a bunch of ultra New Yorky-looking old guys who are sophisticatedly dressed as if they’re about to play chess at a public park? They’re the guys wearing rain coats and Scottish cashmere gill caps. Who are they?

Buffalo Bills 30, Denver Broncos 23
Watching Denver face San Diego on NBC primetime next week will evoke that morally iffy feeling you used to get when you stayed quite while witnessing your friend cheat on a test. It seems inherently wrong to watch these two middling teams play for such high stakes.

The best thing Denver has going for them next week is that they’re on the road. That way, when they blow what should have been an easy division title, they at least won’t get booed off the field.

To Denver’s credit, not many teams could handle the injuries at running back as well as they have. The Broncos didn’t run worth a darn in this game, but they were starting their sixth different running back on the season. Overall, Mike Shanahan’s team ranks a solid 16th in the league in rushing.

Mad props to the Bills for fighting back in a meaningless cross-country game in which they fell behind early. Marshawn Lynch and Fred Jackson were particularly impressive.

Washington Redskins 10, Philadelphia Eagles 3
The Eagles are like a hyperactive puppy or a rebellious ADD-riddled 12-year-old: the second you put down your guard and give them any sort of positive feedback, they disappoint you.

Philly is actually a fairly simple team to figure out: when Brian Westbrook is right, they’re good. When he’s not, they’re bad.

DeSean Jackson had one of those defining rookie learning experiences. And this time it did not involve him throwing the ball away before crossing the goal-line. The impressive young star dropped four passes on the day, including what looked to be a game-tying grab in the end-zone.

It’s an utter shock, and quite frankly, a disgrace, to hear Jim Zorn’s name mentioned amongst coaches on the hotseat. The first-year head man has done a semi-marvelous job with this team. Washington’s problem is that they’ve hit a wall, in part because their running back and offensive tackles got hurt. Can Zorn do better? Absolutely. But it’s up to Dan Snyder to give him the chance.

Atlanta Falcons 24, Minnesota Vikings 17
How is it that Minnesota was minus-four in the turnover battle on the afternoon, yet had an opportunity to tie the game on the final drive inside the final two minutes? Does that say more about the Vikings or the Falcons?

People will start to say it now, but please, let me at least try to be the first: as great as Adrian Peterson is, it’s clear the man has a fumbling problem.

It came in a losing effort, but the reversal of fortunes for Tarvaris Jackson could prove to be one of the most stunning stories of the 2008 season. Benched because of ineptitude in September, it seems the talented third-year pro has somehow managed to learn the West Coast offense, as well as develop game-management techniques and poise in the pocket just from standing on the sideline and watching Gus Frerotte the past three months.

Visanthe Shiancoe is also coming on extremely strong for Minnesota.

As for Atlanta, they’re officially the new sexy team in the NFC. Over the next few weeks, you’ll hear about how incredible Michael Turner – did you know that he’s L.T.’s former backup !!?? – has been, what a great job Mike Smith has done and how Matt Ryan is the next great signal-caller, ala Dan Marino or Ben Roethlisberger. It will get annoying, but at least all this hype is substantiated.

The True Guru Wins His First Championship of 2008!

This has been a very rough playoffs for me this year, but I finally pulled done my first championship of the year. I won the Vegas Vs Texas League, which the championship match was a rematch of the 2007 championship. Mongol Horde (Mike Santiago) has always been one of the strongest managers and franchises in the 9 year existence of the league. He has won 2 championships and been to a total of four. This year his team just did not show up week 16. He fell prey to bad weather and bad players. The final score of "VVTL Superbowl IX was 154-99. The match did have some excitement as the score was 154-54 after the Sunday DAY games, and I was completely finished with my players. Mongol Horde still had three big players in Greg Jennings, Matt Forte, and the NY Giants defensive. Those three players could get 100 points, but only managed 45 points.

In my other two semifinal matchups I was able to win one and lose the other. In the Fantasy Dynasty League I defeated a great competitor in Coming Back For More in a dogfight that went down to the wire 283-272. I was down by 33 points going into the Monday night game, but I had Gregg Jennings, Lance Briggs, Charles Tillman, Charles Woodson, and Tramon Williams left and Coming Back For More had only Aaron Kampmen. I overcame the deficit with Charles Woodson's 3rd quarter interception and never looked back.

In my 3rd and final matchup in the Coast-2-Coast League, I was defeated 138-82 by Tharp's Titans. I was the defending champion in this league and over the past two seasons I had a combined record of 27-4, but this week I couldn't pull it out. The lost primarily can be blamed on the weather and injuries. My elite players like Kurt Warner, Larry Fitzgerald. Frank Gore was out and Westbrook was playing hurt. Other then that I just made bad replacement starts like Lance Moore over Antonio Bryant, benching Tyler Thigpen, Chris Johnson and Larry Fitzgerald. I started Matt Schaub and it was a miserable failure. No matter what I would have done, I wouldn't have overcome the amount of points Tharp's Titans put up. In the three year history of this fantastic league, Tharp's Titans and LV Cowboys (me) have each won a championship and now Tharp's Titans will go for a second one.

The True Guru Goes Down In Flames Week 15

This was the hardest week of the season for me. I know allot of people feel the pain of failure this week as so many great players under performed or didn't perform at all. Out of my 6 leagues, 4 were up for grabs as I had BYE weeks in 2. I only won in 1 league and that was the Vegas Vs Texas league where I won my division championship and I will play in the championship match next week. I will be defending my title from last year against the same guy I beat last year.

The leagues I lost in were all expert leagues. In the JAIL league I was done in by no other then Vincent Jackson. I lost 136-131, but Junkyard Jake had Jackson put up 15 points in the last 6 minutes of that game and it cost me.

I got smoked in the Fantasy Football Search Expert League 144-114. I got nothing out of Lendale White, Reggie Bush, and Lance Moore. I also benched Bernard Berrian.

Finally, I got tanked in the NFS Experts League 143-98. I did lose Addai for that game, but it didn't matter. Drew Bree underperformed and so did Westbrook.

I have 3 big games next week and a few small consolation games. Hopefully I will pull out at least 3 titles this season.

Fantasy & Reality: An irritating time of the year

Dave Richard Senior Fantasy Writer CBS Sportsline

    Begin sarcasm ... now
Thank you, Clinton Portis. Thank you, Ryan Grant. Thank you, Roddy White. Thank you, Brandon Marshall, Jay Cutler and Eddie Royal. Thank you, Chris Johnson and LenDale White. Thank you, Larry Fitzgerald and Anquan Boldin.
    Your timing was so perfect.
Thank you, the entire offense of the New York Giants. Thank you, Colts DST. Thank you, Matt Ryan. Thank you, Lee Evans.

Jay Cutler picked a poor time to throw for just 172 yards with a TD and a pick. A season-long thank you to the Bengals' all-talk, little-stats receiving tandem of Chad Johnson and T.J. Houshmandzadeh. I know I'm supposed to focus on Week 15 here, but I can't resist.
Thank you, guy in my league who picked up Dominic Rhodes before I could and then started him against me, leaving me with Tatum Bell as my waiver-wire addition of the week.
Thank you, Torry Holt, who played well at home for the second time this season, but who I benched for Marvin Harrison. By the way, thanks Marvin.
And last but not least, a big, fat thank you to Terrell Owens and Jason Witten for being in the media all week for an alleged "near altercation" (we're seriously reporting near altercations now?!), then totaling 82 yards on eight catches in a game where all eyes are on you.
Just in time for Week 15. Thanks a whole heaping ton.
    End sarcasm ... now
Fine, I promise you I'm not bitter. In fact, only a couple of these thank yous apply to me. The above was done to represent all of our frustrations. If you made it through Week 15 without even one of these guys sinking your Fantasy production, then it's lottery ticket time because you're feeling lucky. I played in three leagues Sunday and had at least one of these guys on each of my teams.
And the truth is that we could come up with a list like this every week (thank you oh sooo much, Bernard Pollard in Week 1), but Week 15 was when we needed players to step up the most ... well, until Week 16 anyway. It's almost Murphy's Law that stud players who carry our lineups for most of the season drown themselves in a kiddie pool of poor play in the one week we didn't need it to happen.
The most glaring performance is the one turned in by Clinton Portis, though it's not entirely his fault. In the nine games prior to Week 15 where he had at least 20 carries, Portis had 100 yards in six of them with 96 yards in another. Also in those nine 20-plus carry contests, he had seven touchdowns. Give any running back 25 carries against the Bengals and he should have a field day. Portis had 77 yards thanks in part to a second-string offensive line that played like a third-string O-line and couldn't pry open holes, and he didn't get his name called on two consecutive goal-line plays that ultimately sealed the Redskins' fate. Of course, the biggest problem here is that there's nothing we can do about it. Sit Portis at Cincinnati? There wasn't a person under the sun who thought Portis would do poorly against these Bengals, even with his line's woes. Very often you'll hear "start your studs" and "dance with the ones who brung you," but it's pretty clear that at this point you're dancing with the most effective players who have the best matchups, just as you would in any given week.
So if you lost, it's not like you did anything wrong (unless you benched your starter for J.P. Losman or something like that). You put out your best lineup and let the chips fall. I realize this isn't exactly consolation, but that's just how Fantasy Football goes. If you don't like it, there's probably a fun Fantasy Tiddly-Winks League somewhere out there for you to join.
    Fantasy & Reality
Quick observations about the misconceptions (Fantasy) and truths (Reality) during the week's action.
Fantasy: Tarvaris Jackson kills the Fantasy value of Bernard Berrian. To be fair, Berrian did only catch one pass, even if it did go for a 41-yard touchdown. And Jackson wasn't perfect, but he did make some nice throws against the Cardinals' awful pass defense. Jackson should receive some consideration for Week 16 vs. Atlanta -- if he remains the starter -- but there's nothing in his past play that suggests he'll keep this up. Owners can't make the same mistake with Berrian.
Reality: Philip Rivers is a gamer. Down by 11 points with five minutes to play, Rivers led his team on two touchdown drives without the help of Kansas City penalties (just Kansas City defense). He drove them to their first score when he hit Malcom Floyd from four yards out, then after the Chargers recovered an onside kick, drove them again and connected with Vincent Jackson on a 10-yard pass with under a minute to play. In his first 55 minutes, Rivers had just over 200 yards passing and two turnovers. In the ensuing five minutes, he added 138 passing yards and two touchdowns. The way Rivers has collected his stats over his last two games (he had three touchdowns on just 10 completions vs. Oakland in Week 14) has been absolutely mind blowing.
Fantasy: The Buccaneers run defense is one that should be feared. Four touchdowns and over 300 yards on the ground allowed to the Panthers last week, 152 yards and a score yielded to Falcons rusher Michael Turner this week. LaDainian Tomlinson coming to the Pirate Ship next week and the Raiders the next. Monte Kiffin leaving the Bucs after the season. It's all starting to pile up for a Bucs team that was down a defensive tackle on Sunday and couldn't get in the Falcons' way.
Reality: Sammy Morris and Dominic Rhodes will help Fantasy owners. Fine, both played against really awful run defenses, but this is an example of matchups dictating Fantasy success. Morris torched the Raiders for over 110 yards and a score and was pulled for LaMont Jordan, who also ran for nearly 100 yards and a touchdown. Rhodes had two touchdowns and 100 total yards. Morris gets the cross-country traveling Cardinals at home next week while Rhodes, if he starts, should enjoy facing the Jaguars on Thursday night.
Fantasy: The Lions can't hang with the Colts. As one ardent Indianapolis fan who works in the office pointed out to me, the Colts have seemingly played down to their competition. They just got done with a three-game stretch at Cleveland, vs. Cincinnati and vs. Detroit and scored only one blowout win in the process. The good news is that so long as they don't play a team with a 6-foot-4 double team-busting machine at wide receiver, they'll be fine. Next up for Indy: Jacksonville. They should win by 14 ...
Reality: This season isn't over yet, but next year will have some incredible challenges. Through 15 weeks, there are 11 running backs and 11 wide receivers with 1,000 yards or more. Of the running backs, maybe three were first-round material (Adrian Peterson, Clinton Portis, Marshawn Lynch). Of the wide receivers, three were considerations in the top 25 (Andre Johnson, Larry Fitzgerald, Reggie Wayne). The other 16 players involved weren't high-profile Fantasy picks. That was last year; next year, we'll see them all in there -- in what order remains to be seen.
    Strategy session
I'm playing for a league championship in Week 16. Any words of wisdom?
Even at this late stage in the game, there is something you can do with your roster to boost your chances of winning. Simply put, you have to make the most out of every single spot on your bench.
For many owners, Week 16 is the end. Win or lose, there is nothing significant left to play for. That said, if there are any players on your bench who you know won't produce big stats and you know you won't use, cut 'em loose. Players such as backups to your studs (assuming you are confident that your stud player is healthy and will start next week), backup Fantasy quarterbacks, kickers and DSTs. For instance, if you are carrying Ryan Moats as insurance for Steve Slaton, you can let him loose. The only way you keep one of your backups is if you think your opponent might start them.
Use the same logic to attack the waiver wire and grab players your rival might need. We're talking about any players who might be of use in Week 16 -- Tarvaris Jackson, Brian Griese, DeShaun Foster, P.J. Pope, Maurice Morris, Cedric Benson, James Jones and so on.
Moreover, if your opponent has been doing a balancing act at a certain position, go after players at that position. This includes DSTs, by the way -- snaring Week 16 choices like the Saints (at the Lions), 49ers (at the Rams), Broncos (vs. the Bills) or Bengals (at the Browns) take those players off your opponents' table. Remember, they cannot count against your squad if they're on your squad.
The other thing you can do is set your lineup on Tuesday afternoon and just keep an eye out for news during the week, not making changes unless something pushes you to do so (a defensive injury to a player's Week 16 opponent, for example). This isn't rocket science -- go with your best lineup of players with the best matchups.
OK, Dave, how in blue blazes were you able to snare Clinton Portis, Brian Westbrook and LaDainian Tomlinson on the same team in a 14-team league along with Calvin Johnson and Steve Smith?
Last week, I wrote about a roster decision that turned out to be inconsequential, but in the process I ran down my roster. No one cared about my third receiver dilemma -- instead, everyone was curious about how I built a roster that included the guys listed above. Here is my story.
I had the 11th pick out of 14 in our serpentine draft, held in late August. The league starts one quarterback, two running backs, three receivers (tight ends included), one flex and counts receptions. My draft went as follows:
Round 1: Clinton Portis Round 2: Maurice Jones-Drew Round 3: Calvin Johnson Round 4: Steve Smith Round 5: Chris Johnson Round 6: Brett Favre (I passed on Jay Cutler. Ugh.)Round 7: Steve Slaton Round 8: Joey Galloway Round 9: Owen Daniels Round 10: Vincent Jackson Round 11: Kevin Curtis Round 12: Ladell Betts Round 13: Panthers DSTRound 14: Jacob Hester Round 15: Ryan Longwell
I found myself rich at running back pretty quickly and realized that I needed to make a move or else find myself making tough lineup decisions down the road. But before I could trade two for one, I had the chance to deal off Slaton straight up for Westbrook before Week 6. While it meant that I had to wait two weeks to use Westbrook since he didn't play at San Francisco that week and had a bye the next, I had the depth to make such a move. So that's how I got Westbrook.
Still needing to make a two-fer, I negotiated myself to the brink of a deal following Tomlinson's bye week. The deal was essentially Chris Johnson and Jones-Drew, who was in a mini-slump around Week 9, for L.T. and DeSean Jackson. After reviewing the second-half schedules of all running backs involved, I put my money on Tomlinson. While the deal has backfired from a statistical point of view, which I knew would happen seeing as how I was trading off two running backs, it made setting my lineup easier -- I avoided some pitfalls involving Jones-Drew and Johnson over the last couple of weeks. Plus, DeSean Jackson has helped my receiving corps.
What I did try to do was trade off one of my running backs for a quarterback, especially since I am platooning between Brett Favre and whomever I can find off the waiver wire. Nevertheless, I did something right as I'm on the brink of the league championship. A nice game by Westbrook and Jackson against the Browns and I'm in the finals.
Cliff's notes: I drafted really well and made timely trades.
I'm out of my Fantasy league. My season is over. I want to get better at Fantasy Football. What can I do? Help!!
Before I did this for a living, I played Fantasy Football annually and couldn't win. From 1997 until 2000, I never did any better than the semifinals of a league. I was tired of losing.
So I spent the offseason before 2001 studying football every day. I built my own depth charts and player rankings, and I formed my own opinions about players, occasionally cross-referencing them with the wisdom of Fantasy writers around the web. Remember, at that time Fantasy Football was still developing on the Internet (heck, the Internet was still developing) and there weren't a lot of places to go for daily Fantasy news and notes like there is now.
And like anything else, the studying and paying attention paid off. I not only won my league in '01, but I began a string of four straight years of winning leagues. And, it put me in a position to do this professionally and share with you how to get a leg-up on your competition.
Simply put, and this is as much a fact as it is a shameless plug, if you want to win your league next year, you need to stay plugged in to Fantasy Football all offseason long. One of the best parts of my job is that I'm plugged in to Fantasy Football all offseason and it is my job to keep you updated not only on the news around the NFL, but news that could impact how you draft next summer.
Use the CBSSports.com message boards as a place to start conversations. E-mail me and Jamey Eisenberg. Listen to our podcasts, read our stories and Q&As with players and coaches. We're not doing our job if we are not helping you win your league, and it's as true now as it is in the dead of March.
    So keep in touch.
    Parting shots
    • I doubt it was done on purpose, but if it was, huge kudos to Tony Romo and Cowboys offensive coordinator Jason Garrett for not involving Terrell Owens and Jason Witten much against the Giants. It's almost as if they took a page out of the Giants' playbook with Plaxico Burress (pre-inflicted gunshot) and said, "If you're gonna be a pain in the rear in the media, we're not going to use you much and still win." Again, I don't know if that was Romo's intention or Garrett's intention, but if it was, the message should have gotten through loud and clear.
    • I'd be remiss if I didn't mention a TV show that I'd like everyone to try and remember to watch. This Tuesday at 8 p.m. ET, Dan Rather Reports on HDNet (channel 79 on DirecTV and channel 9422 on Dish Network) will run a feature on Galveston Island in Texas, how it was ravaged by Hurricane Ike and whether or not the city should be rebuilt. As many regular readers know, my parents live on Galveston and my Mom is a native. The island, which was a hopping tourist spot before the storm, has seen damage beyond anyone's imagination and could lose its hospital, the University of Texas Medical Branch. We live and play in a Fantasy world here, but this is the real thing. Also, this is not a call for handouts or charity. Simply put, if you're interested in seeing the devastation caused by one of the largest storms in U.S. history (including at my parents' house), and the ramifications of the said storm, watch the show. Thank you.
    • If I were a Steelers fan, I'd be worried. Pittsburgh may have won their last two games, but both of the game-winning scores were kind of fluky. You've got DeShea Townsend's interception-return for a touchdown vs. Dallas last week and Santonio Holmes' questionable score at Baltimore this week. The Steelers offense has been responsible for 13 points in each of their last two games, the running game has hit a snag and Ben Roethlisberger's been sacked eight times in his last two games. Methinks the O-line in the Steel City is a wee bit leaky. I like Pittsburgh's chances against an Albert Haynesworth-less Tennessee club in Week 16, but there's no guarantee that he'll still be sidelined if they meet in the playoffs about a month later.
    • The Steelers aren't the only ones -- the Giants have been exposed in their last two games against division rivals. Suddenly, running backs are picking up long gains on this defense and Eli Manning can't connect with all of his receivers as easily as he could when he had Plaxico Burress taking coverage with him down field. New York desperately needs Brandon Jacobs to be healthy for Week 16 -- their matchup with Carolina is for the No. 1 seed in the NFC. The Panthers have the defense to really hinder the Giants, especially if they're not getting bruised by Jacobs 20-25 times.
    • But the Steelers and the Giants aren't alone -- the Titans are also exposed! This was the first time this season that Tennessee allowed a 100-yard rusher and 100-yard receiver (a 200-yard receiver, actually). How did Houston do it? Taking advantage of single coverage with a tall, physical receiver and then barreling away with the running game. Then on defense, Houston did a nice job stacking up against the run and playing tight against Kerry Collins. Though Collins did hit some deep throws (he also missed some), putting pressure on him made all the difference. Sounds like these are things the Steelers could do next week, doesn't it?
    • Two weeks ago, we were lauding the Steelers, Giants and Titans as the best in the NFL. Are they still? Predicting the Super Bowl at this point is completely useless because there isn't a team you can really make a case for. I suppose the Steelers have a shot, especially if they get home-field advantage, but as I've mentioned, they have a pretty big weakness.
Go ahead -- make a Super Bowl pick now, even with more than half the league eliminated from playoff contention. The team that's hot one week is not a week later. There's nothing that makes any pick look more promising than the next. It's all up in the air right now.
Sort of sounds like Fantasy Football, doesn't it?

DeAngelo Williams and Jonathan Stewart Question

Q: Should I start both DeAngelo Williams and Jonathan Stewart at the time?

I've been asked this question allot this week in emails, so I figured I'd answer it in a detailed blog post. I'll start off by saying I've never been a fan of starting two players in the same offense, let alone two runningbacks in the same offense. The first one is hard to avoid, but the second choice is much more rare. Today there are two, maybe three legitimate runningback combos in the league that would even merit consideration for starting both runningbacks. Those are Chris Johnson/Lendale White, Brandon Jacobs/Derrick Ward, and DeAngelo Williams/Jonathan Stewart. Right now many leagues are in the playoffs, and every decision you make can make or break your season. I'm pretty sure this question is being asked because you haven't done it all year long, but maybe you should try it now. My answer to that is no in most cases and here is why.

Now lets get out of the way issues like all your other runningbacks are injured or your other best runningback is Warrick Dunn. OK, then start him. If you already have another quality back you've been starting, why would you change now. Keep doing what got you here. I wouldn't go into my Prevent defense. Adding Jonathan Stewart to your lineup is basically decreasing your chances for points automatically. Sure Williams and Stewart can do what they did last week, but consider the fact that they've only done it once in 13 games. The reason from a statistical point is they simply cannot score points at the same time. TO put it even better, each runningback slot you have in your lineup gets 60 minutes of football to score points. Since it is impossible for Williams and Stewart to be carrying the ball at the same time you are in effect cutting you point scoring time to 60 minutes for two slots, instead of 120 minutes. Besides that, there is just a better chance that one will do better then the other. Stewart might be more effective and he gets the more carries. That is what happened early on and that happened. DeAngelo Williams suffered. Now, its the opposite way around, and Williams in on fire. Also keep in mind that Stewart is a rookie and rookies can wear down late in the season from a very long year where rookies go from bowl games, to combines, to drafts, to rookie camps, and all the way through a much longer 16+ game season.

Whatever you do, as long has you have a solid #2 or #3 runningback do not start Jonathan Stewart alongside of DeAngelo Williams. It may cost you your season.

The Guru Gridiron Report: Week 15 Bench/Start Wide Receivers

There are allot of of great opportunities for wide receivers to make a big impact on your fantasy teams. Most of the games this week except for the Pittsburgh Vs. Baltimore matchup offer some type of strong receiver option. Beware of the weather. I am basing my projections on the projected weather. If that changes the players value will move up or down based on the weather impact.

Things have been crazy for The True Guru this week, so I will make sure I get my picks for the Thursday night football game out in time. Fighting Chance Fantasy's Start/Bench Week 15

    Quarterbacks

Start: Tyler Thigpen, Kansas City Chiefs vs. San Diego Chargers. If you would have told me in September that I would be starting this article for Week 15 with Tyler Thigpen I would have laughed in your face. Hell, if you had told me I would be talking about Thigpen at all I wouldn’t have believed it. But here we are doing just that, and I expect a good game out of him this week. His stats have fallen off a little in the past couple of weeks even against poor defenses in Oakland and Denver, but this week he will face a defense that he took apart just five weeks ago. In his first meeting with the Chargers, Thigpen was 27/41 for 266 yards and three touchdown passes. San Diego will probably have a little better grasp of what to expect out of him this time around, but I don’t see them being able to hold him under 250 yards or two TD throws.

Start: Donovan McNabb, Philadelphia Eagles vs. Cleveland Browns. Last week I wrote a short article declaring that even though McNabb had that good game against the Cardinals that you shouldn’t get all excited about him again and count on him to score you big points this year. Well, a guy is allowed to reconsider once in a while isn’t he? Here’s my thinking. The Browns are down to their third string QB, and have nothing to play for except for their coach and I don’t know how much that means to them at this point. In the last few weeks of the season you need to look for teams that have already started to set their tee times after the last game and the Browns fit that mold perfect. They have little chance to compete, they know that, so I don’t see them playing that hard. Even a McNabb that I’m not high on should have a good game against the Brownies.

Sit: Joe Flacco, Baltimore Ravens vs. Pittsburgh Steelers. You gotta love what this rookie has been doing, but you can’t love this matchup for him. The Steelers have made quite a few good quarterbacks look bad this year (hello Tony Romo, Donovan McNabb, and Philip Rivers), and you have to believe that Flacco doesn’t stand much of a chance to have a good statistical game. Joe didn’t have a great game last week against Washington where he didn’t even throw for 150 yards and had just one touchdown. Look for the same type of game this Sunday against the Steelers, and there is a good chance he will turn the ball over two or more times.

Sit: Ben Roethlisberger, Pittsburgh Steelers vs. Baltimore Ravens. This game should be a good old fashioned smashmouth AFC North showdown for first place. Well, this division isn’t exactly known for it’s passing game. You can bet that by 4:15 on Sunday in Baltimore that it will be as cold as a witch’s…..well, you know, really cold. Big Ben has had four games where he didn’t even throw a touchdown this season, and he only had one to go with 191 yards in their first meeting. He was sacked three times, intercepted once, and fumbled once, and you can expect another hard hitting, low scoring game this time around. Try to find a better option than Roethlisberger.

    Running Backs

Start: Joseph Addai, Indianapolis Colts vs. Detroit Lions. I know, I know, it is an easy call to start anyone against Detroit. I wanted to pick one Colts player in this matchup and I thought given his recent struggles that Addai would be the one who is the least bit of a no brainer. He did split some carries with Dominic Rhodes in Week 14, but don’t forget that they also did blow out the Bengals so they didn’t really need to keep him on the field too much. There is a danger to that happening again versus the Lions, but they are the worst defense against the run by both yards and touchdowns so how can you not play Addai? Look for at least 75 yards on the ground, plus four catches and a touchdown either on the ground or through the air.

Start: Stephen Jackson, St Louis Rams vs. Seattle Seahawks. Again, if we were doing this article back in Week 1 you all would be emailing me and saying “Joseph Addai and Stephen Jackson, way to go out on a limb by saying start them!” But at this point, both studs coming into the season have been anything but studly. Jackson has been good since coming back from his latest nagging injury however, and you gotta love the fact that the guy WANTS that ball in his hands. He got back into the end zone for the first time in a while last week, and seeing that Seattle gives up over 120 yards a game on the ground, look for Jackson to have his first 100 yard game in nearly a year.

Sit: Marshawn Lynch, Buffalo Bills vs. New York Jets. Both of these teams are really struggling the past couple of weeks to score points, so when they face each other don’t expect fireworks. Out of the two teams in this game I would expect the Jets to be the team to turn it around and have a decent finish if either one of them will. The Jets have stuffed the run most of the year and should do the same again on Sunday. The first two times that these teams met Lynch had his worst game of the season in which he rushed just nine times for 16 yards. I don’t expect it to be that bad, but I would think he will go too far over 50.

Sit: Michael Turner, Atlanta Falcons vs. Tampa Bay Buccaneers. When a team excels at one facet of defense like the Bucs do against the run, and then they get embarrassed on defense like the Bucs did on Monday night by Carolina, you can bet that the next week they come out they will do everything they can to make sure that it doesn’t happen again. Tampa allowed under 100 yards a game and had only allowed one rushing touchdown before that game. Carolina ran for just over 300 yards and had FOUR rushing TDs in that one game alone. You better believe that Monte Kiffin will be focusing on run defense this week in practice, even if he has one foot out the door to go to Tennessee. Turner has struggled some against good run defenses (duh, that’s what makes them good run defenses), but his first game against Tampa he ran 14 times for just 42 yards, and I wouldn’t expect him to rush for too much more than that on Sunday.

    Wide Receivers

Start: Wes Welker, New England Patriots vs. Oakland Raiders. I’m not exactly sure why, but Welker just hasn’t gotten the credit he has deserved this season. Throughout all the turmoil from the loss of Tom Brady and the learning curve of Matt Cassel, Welker has still only had ONE game where he had less than six catches. I have to be honest, I didn’t think he would be able to repeat last year’s performance, but the guy is making a full time believer out of me. That being said the Pats should eat the Raiders alive and look for Welker to have 7-8 catches for near 100 yards an most likely a touchdown.

Start: Greg Jennings, Green Bay Packers vs. Jacksonville Jaguars. The Jags have been a pretty decent pass defense as far as yardage is concerned (just over 200 a game), but they have allowed 21 touchdown passes this season which is third worst in the NFL. Aaron Rodgers has taken a bigger step forward than anyone could have anticipated, and I see him having a big game on Sunday. Jennings should be a big recipient of this production. Look for Jennings to have six catches for 115 and a score.

Sit: Calvin Johnson, Detroit Lions vs. Indianapolis Colts. It is always hard to suggest someone to sit a guy with the physical gifts that Calvin Johnson possesses, but here are the reasons behind it. The Colts defense allows just over 185 yards through the air which is good. But in 13 games this season they have allowed only FOUR passing touchdowns! Is that incredible or what? I just don’t see Daunte Culpepper breaking that great statistic up no matter how good Calvin is. He has a world of talent and is already over 1,000 yards, but I think you might have a better option this week.

Sit: Laverneous Coles, New York Jets vs. Buffalo Bills. The Jets are a mess. First, they lose to the Broncos, no big deal right? Then they lose to San Francisco and suddenly their fan base is in panic mode. In the game against the Niners, Coles had his third game this season in which he registered just one catch and his production has been far too inconsistent to recommend playing him. In the first meeting of the season against the Bills, Laverneous had just three catches for 40 yards. He also apparently went on some radio station and said the hardest passes thrown to him come from the machines in practice. I guess that was supposed to be a shot at Favre since his relationship with his new quarterback still isn’t the same as it was with Pennington. Hey Laverneous, if you loved Chad so much, how come you didn’t mind leaving him when you took that big free agent contract to go to Washington? Stop crying and play football!

    Tight End

Start: Chris Cooley, Washington Redskins vs. Cincinnati Bengals. Like the Browns, the Bengals have also packed it in as their season has been a disaster since Carson Palmer went down and was unable to return from his elbow injury. Cincinnati has been giving up points in bunches lately, and even though I have absolutely no faith in Jason Campbell, even he should be able to pass pretty easily on this defense. Cooley has been a massive disappointment with only one touchdown catch, but before last week against Baltimore he had six straight games of at least five catches and in five of those games he was also over 50 yards. Look for Cooley to find pay dirt for the second time this year.

Sit: Tony Scheffler, Denver Broncos vs. Carolina Panthers. After five catches in three games when returning from injury looked like his value was gone, Scheffler has turned it around with twelve catches in the past two games. However, this week he gets the ultra tough Panthers’ defense and I don’t see Jay Cutler being able to throw the ball around whenever he feels like it. Carolina has only given up an average of one touchdown pass per game and the Broncos have a bunch of other options that I would bet on before Scheffler.

    Wild NFL Christmas Party

    By Andy Benoit, www.NFLTouchdown.com

Hi, happy holidays. Welcome to our 2008 NFL Christmas party. Thanks for coming. So glad you could make it. No worries about being late – you’re not the only one. We’re still waiting on Plaxico. He does this every year. Hopefully he’ll show soon – he has a great surprise awaiting him. I heard that Antonio Pierce drew Plaxico’s name for Secret Santa; earlier tonight, I found Antonio in the guest room, wrapping a Red Ryder BB Gun.
Can I take your coat? Actually, it looks like it’s a little wet from the snow. Better give it to Kurt Warner – he loves hanging things out to dry. And he says he’s going to be staying around the hall closet and away from the main room all night anyway. Doesn’t like how the lights and glitzy decorations commercial the birth of Christ, or something like that.
Did you find Warner? Good. Come with me, I’ll show you around. How were the roads on your way in? LaDainian Tomlinson was saying that they seemed more uphill this year. We think his car might have a bad tire though. L.T. hasn’t been getting places too well lately. Ever since his chauffer, Lorenzo Neal, left, things just haven’t been the same for the guy.
Flozell Adams was also late tonight. He got pulled over by police on the way here. They said he ran a red light. Flozell’s excuse was he thought it was about to turn green.
The entire Vikings team was a little late, too, but if you ask me, I’d say they got here just fine. They all rode Adrian Peterson. Or with Adrian Peterson, I mean. And Brett Favre called to say he wouldn’t make it this year, but he says that every year. Someone said he just called again and is on the way. Well, anyways, I’ll stop blabbering and actually show you around.

This is the main room. You see Tony Romo over there? He’s helping his girlfriend set up the Karaoke machine. I’ll just apologize in advance for this – we simply spaced it when we told Romo he could bring a guest. And I heard his girlfriend recorded a Christmas album a few years ago. Yeah I know, joy to the world, right? Ugh.
Next to Romo is Chad Johnson. We were sure he showed up drunk, but a buddy of mine told me that Johnson actually doesn’t drink at all. That blows my mind. None of us can figure this guy out. He’s been boisterous and abrasive all night, and he keeps saying that his real name is Nacho Cinco, or something like that. He thinks he’s the life of the party, but really, he hasn’t done a thing. See him just standing there while Romo tries to lift that big speaker all by himself? Earlier, Johnson watched Ryan Fitzpatrick carry in a big box of presents, and instead of helping with the load, Johnson just started yelling at Fitzpatrick for not giving him some of the gifts. It didn’t make any sense. (I will admit, though, Fitzpatrick didn’t seem to have any clue what he was doing or where he was going with the gifts.)
Anyway, Johnson’s not drunk, but I wouldn’t recommend talking to him. He’ll probably come up and try talk to you though. Oh! By the way, do you know who was drunk earlier?! That new coach from San Francisco. He showed up with Vernon Davis, hit the eggnog right away, and in no less than 20 minutes, I kid you not, the dude was dropping his pants and lecturing everyone about the proper way to throw a good old-fashioned Christmas party. He was furious that we had Ashanti’s Christmas album playing in the background. He said we should have been listening to Nat King Cole. To be honest, I think a lot of us kind of agreed with him. The coach seems crazy, but deep down, he’s probably the sanest one here. I have no idea where he is now – he started shouting at Davis and telling him to leave. But Davis is his ride home, so figure that one out.
Anyway, follow me. This table is where you can leave your Secret Santa gift. I should mention, we think Bill Belichick is rigging the Secret Santa again. He always seems to know exactly what everyone is getting. You can set your gift here, next to the long box that is obviously Plaxico’s Red Ryder BB Gun.

Week 14 is 4-0 Week For The True Guru

    Leagues: 6 (3 Yahoo!, 2 CBS Sportsline, 1 ESPN)
Total Record: 52-24 (.684 Winning Percentage)

    * Clinched Playoff spot
** Clinched BYE week in first round of playoffs

Like I said throughout the year and I'll say it now, I put everything on the line to prove to my readers that not only is my fantasy football advice the best, but I'll back it up by showing you 6 leagues throughout the season and how my own advice helps me. I managed to make to all the playoffs in my 6 leagues, including 2 expert leagues and the infamous Johnny Archive J.A.I.L league. This week I got to rest in 2 leagus with first round playoff BYES. In another 2, I had to play the last week of the season. Finally, in the last two I fought in the first round of the playoffs. Here are those results

    Coast 2 Coast League **
LV Cowboys 111 , Wildcats 92 (SCORED LEAGUE HIGH SCORE)*
This game was meaningless. I already clinched the BYE week, so it didn't mean anything, I still had a great game and managed to get the my 6th weekly high score f the season. I get week 15 off with the BYE has the other teams hammer it out for the playoffs. The other BYE week team Packers Forever crushed me this season and is a danger to my championship aspirations.

    Football Dynasty VI**
LV Cowboys 284, The Assassin 229
This was a very important win cause I needed it to clinch the BYE week. The season ended and I finished with 9 wins and the BYE week. I had a big day from Steve Smith, Reggie Bush, and several defensive players. Week 15 will be a rest week as I get to see who I will play in round 2.

    J.A.I.L. League*
The True Guru 110, Jersey Hitman 88
This game as much closer than it looked and Jersey Hitman put on a comeback of huge proportions, but with Kasay left to go on Monday and a 12 point lead it was over. Joe Lano has now become my #1 rival and a good friend. I'm sure he is chomping at the bit to get at me next season. I never look forward to facing such a talented manager. I had to do it twice this season and was very lucky both times.

    Vegas Vs Texas League**
    PLAYOFF ROUND 1 BYE WEEK
I will be facing my arch rival and brother LV Ravens for the chance to go to the championship. We went 1-1 in the regular season and his team boasts DeAngelo Williams, Jay Cutler, Ronnie Brown, and the Titans defense.

    NSP Experts League

    PLAYOFF ROUND 1 BYE WEEK
I get to play Luckylester.com this week and his team was dominating most of the year. The one time we played he crushed me. Hopefully my team has improved enough to beat him in round 2 of the playoffs.

    Fantasy Football Search Expert League
Fantasy Football Search 125, Scout Fantasy Football 72
I got past my buddy Jeff in the first round of the playoffs with huge performances from the Arizona Cardinals defense, Reggie Bush, Lendal White, and Tyler Thigpen. I started Thigpen over Romo and it paid off. Next I face the division champion Big Game Fantasy Sports.
