News & Notes 10/1
Pay no attention to Marc Bulger's futile attempt to not rule himself out for Sunday's game against the 49ers. Bulger realizes that is starting job is in jeopardy once everyone notices what Kyle Boller can do and the stability he will bring to the Rams offense. Boller gets at least this start and could very well hold the job even when Bulger's shoulder is all better.
Also unlikely to play this week is Steelers RB Willie Parker. Parker is dealing with a case of turf toe which is always havoc for RB's. RaShard Mendenhall is back in the coaching staff's good graces (how convenient!) and would likely get the start. But don't rule out MeWelde Moore from taking plenty of snaps in Parker's place as well. Moore endeared himself to the coaching staff last season and has proven to be very effective especially in passing situations. Mendenhall would make a decent RB2 or Flex player this week while Moore could fill in as a decent flex in PPR leagues.
Despite all of the pomp and circumstance surrounding the Green Bay/Minnesota game, I would not bother starting Brett Favre unless you really have no better alternative. This is a classic mistake of fantasy owners getting themselves swayed into a popular news story and watching way too much ESPN. Favre had a good game last week and definitely wants to prove something to the Packers this week. But, Green Bay's defense is no slouch and if you have a Matt Schaub, Eli Manning or Jay Cutler you are far better off than getting mixed up in the Monday Night hoopla.
There will be no split duty for Glen Coffee this week. He is the 49ers feature RB and will definitely get 20+ carries in Sunday's game against the Rams. Head coach Mike Singletary believes in Coffee and has said publicly that he will not alter gameplans or switch up RB's any differently than if Frank Gore was playing. Getting Coffee in free agency this week will probably win your matchup this week.
Marion Barber will play this week for the Cowboys and is safe to start against the Broncos.
Dwayne Bowe was a surprise at practice Thursday as he showed up and participated in many of the teams activities. Bowe's hamstring proved to be worse off than originally thought as he missed last weeks game and was not involved in any practices earlier this week. I am hearing that while Bowe still has some discomfort and is not 100%, he is trying to prove a point to the coaching staff about his dedication to them and to his teammates. I believe he'll play and should be graded as a WR3 for this weeks game against the Giants.
