Fantasy Football Tonight 7/4
Terrible news today out of Nashville, Tennessee where former NFL All-Pro QB Steve McNair was found dead. McNair appeared to have died as a result of multiple gun shot wounds to the head and chest. Police discovered his body as well as that of a female friend of McNair's in a downtown Nashville condo belonging to the female victim.
Whatever the story behind these tragic events turns out to be it doesn't really matter. At least not to me. We hear stories like this all of the time. Accidents, suicides, over-doses and just plain old murder. It is sad that on what is supposed to be a national day of fun and celebration that a story so violent and so sad had to break.
Life is fragile. It is unforgiving and for some of us it is brief, far too brief. For Steve McNair it lasted 36 years and saw him come from humble beginnings to small school stardom and finally to the biggest stage anywhere, the Super Bowl. Along the way he won awards, became rich, famous, had a wife, four children, close friends and literally millions of adoring fans. Immediately after news broke about his death, former teammates and friends rushed to praise him. Their emotions were real, the disbelief in their tone evident and the sadness overwhelming.
Steve McNair rose to heights many of us can only dream. On this, our nation's birthday we will spend our time eating, drinking and watching fireworks. Remembering that the most important aspects of our lives, freedom and opportunity were born out of the dreams of our forefathers. Steve McNair's life further proves that dreams still come true today.
But as much as McNair's life teaches us, his death may be the hardest of all lessons to learn. For as much as we do in our time here on earth our time is limited. It doesn't matter how rich, famous or good natured you are. As we learned today, it can all be gone in an instant. A beat of our heart, a bump on the head, a crippling disease or a single bullet can make life nothing more than a memory for our friends and relatives to recount. We only get so much time here my friends and none of us know when our time will expire.
Enjoy today. Not just because it is the fourth of July or because you have a cook-out or a fireworks show to watch with friends. But because we all need to do a little more embracing of what we have today and less wishing for what we can get tomorrow. Steve McNair lived a rich and full life but he had so much more he wanted to do. If he knew that it would all be over on this Saturday morning in 2009, do you think he still would have thrown the underneath pass to Kevin Dyson in the closing moments of Super Bowl XXXIV? Or would he have gone for the endzone? If everyday could be our last, let's embrace it that way. Let us celebrate each day like it is a national holiday. I know that I can't wait to finish this article and go back out to hug my wife and kids and spend the remainder of the day and night celebrating with family and friends. Let's dedicate not just tonight, but everyday to those who have left us well before their time. Let's honor them by living our lives to the fullest. Caring for each other and doing for future generations what our forefathers did for us.
Have a safe and happy 4th of July everybody!!
