Patriots Will Survive

Sunday will bring the unthinkable. Brett Favre will take the field in front of a raucous home crowd wearing green and…white. Tom Brady won’t take the field at all. This is how CBS will market the game. And this is why we’ll watch. Are we sure that death and taxes are certain?
The last time Matt Cassel started a football game, Brett Favre was failing to win the MVP award for the first time in four years (though he was still pretty good). On Sunday, America will start to speculate about a most unexpected shift in power in the previously-resolved AFC East. Are the Jets primed for a pick off at the top? Or, more accurately, are the Patriots primed for a plunge?
No and no. What Brady’s injury did––besides ruin the season for roughly eight percent of fantasy owners, and expose the pitiful schadenfreude of class of those esteemed football scholars who celebrated New England’s supposed serving of karma––was prompt new questions about the Patriots’ offensive situation. How will the guy under center function on an entirely new stage? How will the playbook look?
